If you have excessive ear wax build up causing hearing loss or other ear-related symptoms, your doctor may recommend getting your ears professionally cleaned. Ear wax removal is a quick and painless procedure, but like any medical appointment, being prepared and knowing what to expect can help ease anxiety. Follow these tips when preparing for ear wax removal.
How to prepare for Microsuction
Microsuction works best when the wax has been softened in the days leading up to the appointment. Hard wax can be more uncomfortable to remove, and sometimes it is hard to remove all of it in one session.
How do I soften earwax?
The best way to soften earwax is with olive oil as follows:
1.Use 2-3 sprays of medical grade olive oil ear spray into each ear that is affected by earwax
2.Massage the tragus (the harder area at the front of the ear) so the oil moves down the ear
3.Lie down with your head on the side and the ear facing upwards. This also helps the oil reach the wax.
4.Repeat the process on the other ear if required.
Ideally this procedure should be performed twice daily for a period of 6 days running up to your appointment.
Before your appointment, read up on the process so you know what to expect. This can help you relax during the procedure. If you have any questions or concerns, write them down to ask your service provider.
Consider Medication Needs
Let your provider know if you take any medications, especially blood thinners. Although very unlikely, these types of medications can increase the risk of bleeding if your ear canal gets scratched during the Microsuction process.
Your provider may recommend stopping blood thinners briefly before the appointment depending on your medical history and the reason you take them. Never stop medication without first consulting your prescribing doctor.
Discuss pain relievers as well. Your provider can recommend an over-the-counter pain medication to take before your appointment if you are prone to ear discomfort or pain. This can minimise any uneasiness during the procedure.
Prepare for Aftercare
After getting your ears cleaned with Microsuction, it’s very important to keep them clean and dry to avoid infections and problems. Here are some simple steps to follow for taking care of your ears:
Keep water out of your ears: For at least 24 to 48 hours after the procedure, avoid swimming or putting your ears underwater. Water can bring bacteria into your ears and cause infections.
Don’t put anything in your ears: Do not use cotton swabs, your fingers, or any other objects in your ears. Microsuction removes earwax, and putting things in your ears can harm the healing process and potentially injure your ear canal.
Use earplugs or cotton balls in the shower: Protect your ears from water during showers by using earplugs or cotton balls. You can also use a shower cap for extra protection if you don’t want to use earplugs or cotton balls.
Maintain good ear hygiene: To prevent earwax buildup, avoid using cotton swabs, which can push wax deeper into the ear canal. If you often have too much earwax, talk to a healthcare professional for advice on safe ear cleaning methods.
Morning of Appointment
Stay calm and remember, the ear wax removal procedure is very quick and will provide relief from built-up ear wax. Preparing properly helps ensure everything goes smoothly so you can get back to comfortably hearing again.
